“Behavior that gets rewarded gets repeated.”
—Eugene Volokh
IF YOU HELP US SUCCEED, WE WILL HELP YOU SUCCEED!
Doesn’t anyone care what I am doing? There is a long-known rule when it comes to recognition: behavior rewarded is often behavior repeated. If you want employees to continue their performance or behavior, you need to reinforce positive behavior. See it, say it! To get employees to want to work, their heart is the doorway to the rest of them.
Don’t hog all the glory! The worst boss you ever had likely hogged all the credit. “We do all the work, and they get all the credit.” This is a symptom of a leader’s hunger for the spotlight. He wants to stay in the spotlight, and forgets to shine the light on others—the opposite of what servant-leaders do. The boss is now sowing the seeds of employees who will resent working for that boss. Employees have an expectation the leader will communicate upward to management on what they are doing. When leaders help their employees succeed, employees will help their leaders succeed.
Don’t take our efforts for granted! Don’t be one of those bosses who walks around and says, “We don’t give people medals around here for doing what they get paid to do.” Recognition is a human need. Some employees need to hear it more than others. If an employee volunteers to come in on a weekend, make sure on Monday you let her know specifically that you appreciated her efforts. If you make a choice not to pay a compliment, will the employee be more or less likely to volunteer again?
Don’t praise the team when you lack the facts! There are few things more demotivating than a leader who recognizes the entire team for a job well done, and yet only a handful of employees actually contributed to the job. What is worse is when you recognize the employees who did not do their share and they begin to think they have pulled one over on the boss.
What about me? When do I get some recognition? Leaders, you have employees who will never hit homeruns, but they will hit singles and doubles. Your team is essentially made up of roses, daisies, and weeds. Recognize the daisies from time to time for maintaining their performance, and you might be surprised how they might try to work faster, harder, and smarter to reach the roses!
Don’t forget who butters your bread! Leaders, you have superstars that may have a huge need for recognition. They may want to hear that you know what they know. Butter these folks up! It doesn’t cost any money, and it falls under your control. They might even make a choice to turn their efforts up even more! Earlier, I noted how I worked 70 hours a week for a company that paid me to work 40 hours. One of the reasons why I had no problem working that many hours, is that my boss was really good at letting me know I
